Gerald Davis
Gerald Davis (1938-2005) was was one of Ireland's leading semi-abstract artists.. He was born in Dublin and studied at the National College of Art & Design. He was also an art gallery owner, critic, and Joycean scholar and a prominent member of the Jewish community in Ireland. He wrote for Irish national newspapers and broadcast on radio and television, where he reported on the arts and Irish Jewish life. He exhibited regularly in Ireland and was a member of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club and also exhibited at the Ben Uri Gallery in London. In all had more than 150 solo exhibitions. His last solo exhibition was held at the Kenny Gallery, Dublin in March 2005. He died in June of that year. Examples of his work are in the collection of Aer Lingus, ACI, Allied Irish Investment Bank, Dublin. The Arts Council of Ireland awarded him with a Douglas Hyde Gold Medal for historical painting in 1977 and in the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork.
